Buyers mix up two polyester stages that look similar on a spec sheet. Greige is cloth off the loom. PFD (prepared for dyeing) has been scoured, and often bleached, so a dyehouse can start color work.
If your own dyehouse will do that preparation, greige polyester is the order. If you need a white base from the finishing route, ask for bleached white and confirm that the quote is for prepared cloth, not loom-state rolls.
What changes for the buyer
| Greige | PFD / prepared for dyeing | |
|---|---|---|
| Stage | Loom-state | Scoured, often bleached, not yet the final shade |
| Typical use | Send to your dyehouse or printer | Start color work with less preparation |
| Width on the contract | Greige width, 160–330 cm on our looms | Finished width after processing, often 150–315 cm |
| GSM on the contract | Greige GSM, about 55–120 g/m² for stock constructions | Finished GSM, about 60–140 g/m² |
| Order floor | No minimum on a stock spec; 5,000 m for a custom width, GSM, or weave | Bleached white: 2,000 m per white program |
| What you still confirm | Oil, weave, and whether the dyehouse accepts that greige | Whiteness target, optical brightener, and who bleaches |
Stock availability for greige changes. Ask sales which widths and GSM are on the floor before you treat “no minimum” as a promise for a custom construction.
When greige is the right cloth
Choose greige when the dyehouse already has a preparation recipe and will own scouring and bleaching. Put the dyehouse’s PFD target in the greige inquiry: whiteness, residual oil, width, and GSM. “PFD” by itself is not a spec.
Our greige is woven on waterjet looms in plain and twill for typical stock goods. Satin stripe uses a dobby attachment on those waterjets. Jacquard is not this mill’s weave.
When to ask for a white base instead
Choose a bleached-white program when you want the finishing route to deliver cloth that is already prepared, and you will then dye or print. The bleaching workshop timing is a sales question for the current season. Do not read a product page as proof that every white roll was bleached in the same building.
CIE whiteness, optical brightener, and the base cloth are part of the match. Two whites can agree in daylight and split under store light.
What to write on the RFQ
- Fiber: 100% polyester
- Stage: greige, or bleached white / PFD, in those words
- Width and GSM, and whether each number is greige or finished
- Weave
- Dyehouse PFD limits, if you are buying greige for someone else to dye
- Order length in meters
GSM and fabric width definitions sit in the glossary. Commercial floors and current stock sit on the product pages.
