Disperse Printing

A printing method using disperse dyes specifically designed for synthetic fibers like polyester, requiring heat for fixation.

Disperse printing uses disperse dyes specifically formulated for synthetic fibers, particularly polyester. These dyes have low water solubility and require high temperatures to penetrate and bond with the hydrophobic structure of synthetic fibers, creating prints with excellent durability and color fastness.

The disperse printing process begins by mixing disperse dyes with thickening agents to create a printable paste with appropriate viscosity. This paste is applied to the fabric through screen printing or other application methods. After printing, the fabric is dried to remove moisture before the critical fixation step. High-temperature treatment, typically between 180°C and 210°C, causes the dye particles to sublime and penetrate into the polyester fiber structure where they become trapped as the fiber cools. Optional reduction clearing removes unfixed surface dye, followed by washing and final drying.

The characteristics of disperse printing make it ideal for polyester textiles. The dye penetrates deeply into the fiber rather than sitting on the surface, resulting in excellent durability through washing and wear. Colors are vibrant and rich on polyester substrates. Wash fastness is generally excellent because the dye is physically trapped within the fiber structure. Light fastness varies depending on the specific dye chemistry selected. The requirement for high-temperature fixation means disperse printing is limited to heat-resistant synthetic fibers.

Disperse printing offers several advantages for polyester applications. The deep fiber penetration creates prints that maintain their appearance through extended use and repeated laundering. A wide range of colors is achievable with good levelness across the printed area. The technology is well-established with reliable, consistent results. Disperse printing is the standard method for polyester bedding, sportswear, flags and banners, and automotive textiles where durability and colorfastness are critical requirements.
