The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) stands as the worldwide leading certification for organic fiber textiles. Unlike certifications that focus solely on the final product, GOTS defines comprehensive environmental and social criteria across the entire supply chain—from harvesting raw organic fibers through manufacturing, packaging, and labeling.

Certification Levels

GOTS offers two certification tiers based on organic fiber content. The "GOTS Organic" label requires a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers, representing the highest level of organic content. The "GOTS Made with Organic" designation requires at least 70% certified organic fibers, allowing some conventional fiber content while still ensuring substantial organic composition.

Environmental Criteria

GOTS environmental requirements are rigorous and comprehensive. Organic fiber content must be verified and traceable to certified organic farms. The standard prohibits toxic inputs including heavy metals, formaldehyde, and genetically modified organisms. Wastewater from processing facilities must meet defined treatment limits before discharge. Chlorine bleaching is banned, as are azo dyes and other substances known to be harmful to human health or the environment. Even packaging must meet environmental standards, with PVC prohibited.

Social Criteria

Drawing from International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, GOTS social criteria ensure ethical treatment of workers throughout the supply chain. The standard prohibits forced, bonded, and child labor while requiring safe and hygienic working conditions. Workers must receive living wages, work reasonable hours, face no discrimination, and have access to regular employment rather than exploitative contract arrangements.

Processing Requirements

Every facility in a GOTS supply chain must be individually certified—there are no exceptions for intermediate processors. Certified facilities must maintain strict separation between organic and conventional products to prevent contamination or mislabeling. Only approved inputs (dyes, auxiliaries, and processing chemicals) may be used, and facilities must implement environmental management systems to monitor and reduce their ecological impact.

Industry Applications

GOTS certification is particularly valued in product categories where consumers prioritize natural, chemical-free materials. Organic cotton bedding, sustainable home textiles, eco-friendly apparel, and baby and children's products represent major application areas. The certification provides brands with credible organic claims and gives consumers confidence in the authenticity of organic products.

Certification Process

Obtaining GOTS certification begins with securing organic fiber sourcing from certified farms. Manufacturers then apply to a GOTS-approved certification body, implement the required management and tracking systems, and undergo on-site inspection. Successful facilities receive certification, with annual recertification required to maintain status.
