Bluesign

A holistic system for sustainable textile production that screens chemical inputs and monitors manufacturing processes.

Also known as: bluesign systembluesign approvedbluesign certifiedblue sign standard

Bluesign takes a fundamentally different approach to textile sustainability compared to end-product testing certifications. Rather than testing finished goods for harmful substances, Bluesign screens chemicals before they enter the manufacturing process, ensuring safer production from the very beginning. This input stream management philosophy addresses environmental and health concerns at their source.

Core Principles

The Bluesign system is built on five interconnected principles that guide sustainable textile production. Resource productivity focuses on minimizing water, energy, and chemical consumption throughout manufacturing. Consumer safety ensures that finished products are safe for end users. Air emission standards control and reduce atmospheric pollutants from production facilities. Water emission requirements manage and minimize discharge to waterways. Occupational health protections safeguard workers from chemical exposure and unsafe conditions.

System Components

Bluesign operates through several integrated components. BLUEFINDER is a comprehensive database of approved chemicals containing over 1,000 screened chemical products. The database is continuously updated as new chemicals are evaluated and existing assessments are refined. System partners—manufacturers who have committed to implementing Bluesign criteria—receive free access to BLUEFINDER.

System Partners are certified manufacturing facilities that have implemented Bluesign criteria throughout their operations. These facilities undergo regular audits and assessments and commit to continuous improvement in their environmental and safety performance.

Bluesign Approved products are chemicals that have been screened and verified to meet Bluesign criteria for environmental and health impact. These approved chemicals are listed in BLUEFINDER and represent the building blocks for sustainable textile production.

Benefits for Manufacturers

Adopting the Bluesign system provides textile manufacturers with proactive chemical management capabilities, reducing the risk of using substances that may later be restricted or banned. This forward-looking approach reduces compliance risk as regulations evolve. Bluesign partnership opens doors to brand relationships, particularly with outdoor and sportswear companies that have embraced the system. Worker safety improves through systematic chemical screening, and overall environmental performance benefits from the system's holistic approach.

Certification Process

Becoming a Bluesign System Partner begins with registration and a comprehensive chemical inventory assessment. Facilities then undergo audits to evaluate current practices against Bluesign criteria. Based on audit findings, manufacturers implement improvements to meet system requirements. Ongoing monitoring and regular updates ensure continuous compliance and improvement.

Industry Applications

Bluesign has found particularly strong adoption among outdoor and sportswear brands, where technical performance fabrics require sophisticated chemical inputs. Home textiles, technical fabrics for industrial applications, and sustainable fashion brands also represent significant application areas. The system's emphasis on input management makes it especially valuable for complex manufacturing processes involving multiple chemical treatments.
