RFD (Ready for Dyeing)

RFD, or Ready for Dyeing, describes fabric that has reached a condition suitable for the dyeing process. This designation commonly appears in textile trade to indicate that fabric can proceed directly to color application without additional preparation steps, streamlining the supply chain between weaving mills and dye houses.

RFD fabric exhibits several essential characteristics that ensure successful dyeing outcomes. The material must be clean and free from impurities that could interfere with dye uptake or cause uneven coloration. Adequate absorbency allows dye molecules to penetrate the fiber structure uniformly. Dimensional stability prevents shrinkage or distortion during the dyeing process. The pH level should be neutral or slightly alkaline to avoid adverse reactions with dye chemistry. Surface properties must be uniform across the entire piece to prevent streaking or patchiness in the finished color.

Achieving RFD status requires several pre-treatment steps applied to greige fabric. Desizing removes the sizing agents applied during weaving to protect warp threads. Scouring eliminates natural impurities such as oils, waxes, and pectins that would repel water-based dyes. Bleaching establishes a consistent base color, removing natural pigments that could affect the final shade. For cotton fabrics, optional mercerization treatment enhances luster and improves dye affinity.

Buyers specify RFD when they need fabric ready for their own dyeing operations without additional preparation. This is common when the buyer operates their own dye house or works with a preferred dyeing partner. Quality testing for RFD fabric includes absorbency testing using the water drop method, pH measurement, whiteness evaluation, and dimensional stability checks—all confirming the fabric will perform predictably in the dyeing process.
