RFD (Ready for Dyeing)

What is RFD fabric? RFD is the trade abbreviation for Ready for Dyeing: cloth that has been prepared so a dye house can apply color without first running full greige preparation. On a purchase order it is a dye-ready stage—not greige fabric straight off the loom.

Full form and synonym risk

RFD expands to Ready for Dyeing (sometimes written ready-for-dye). It is a process-stage label, not a fiber type, brand, or finished fashion color.

In commercial practice RFD and PFD (Prepared for Dyeing) are often used interchangeably. Some suppliers treat PFD as the preparation process and RFD as the resulting condition; others swap the letters freely. The letters alone are not a lab certificate. If a quote or PO says only “RFD,” still list:

• scour / bleach (and any other) steps expected
• absorbency, pH, whiteness, residual limits as the dye house requires
• width, GSM, weave, and fiber after preparation

What to put on the PO when the RFQ says RFD

• Stage word used by the supplier (RFD or PFD) plus your definition of tests
• Preparation expectations (or “per dye-house standard X”)
• Width, GSM, weave, fiber after prep
• Next color path: piece dye / print, then lab dip if shade must match
