Velvet
A pile fabric with a dense, plush face cut from double-woven layers. Weaverine does not weave pile velvet; polyester buyers usually spec peachskin or embossed texture instead.

Velvet fabric is a pile cloth with a dense, plush face. It is woven as two layers face to face, connected by warp pile threads; the layers are then cut apart so each piece keeps its raised face, followed by shearing, dyeing, brushing, and pressing. The trade name traces to Latin villus, shaggy hair. The history runs from early Middle Eastern pile weaving through Silk Road trade into Renaissance European luxury, when silk velvet marked royalty and aristocracy.
The velvet character sits in the construction, not in one fiber: historic goods were silk, while most volume today is cotton, rayon, synthetics, or blends. Home-textile uses cluster on upholstery, curtains, and cushions where the pile reads as depth and light play.
Weaverine does not weave it. Cut pile needs pile looms and a cutting line the mill does not run; the operation is 100% polyester flat-woven cloth on 650+ waterjets. Polyester programs covering the same soft-hand job are peachskin—sanded microfiber with a velvety hand, the mill's #1 bedding program from 5,000 m—or embossed fabric where the brief is surface depth rather than pile. Common questions
What is velvet fabric?
- Velvet is a pile fabric: two layers woven face to face, then cut apart so each piece keeps a dense plush face. The name traces to Latin villus, shaggy hair. Classic velvet was silk; most volume today is cotton, rayon, or polyester pile.
What is velvet made of?
- Historically silk, now cotton, rayon, synthetics, or blends. The velvet character comes from the cut-pile construction—weaving, pile cutting, shearing, dyeing, brushing—not from any single fiber.
Does Weaverine weave velvet?
- No. Velvet needs pile looms and cutting the mill does not operate; Weaverine runs 100% polyester flat-woven cloth on waterjets. Buyers chasing a soft hand usually approve peachskin brushing or embossed texture on a sample instead.
