Scouring
An alkaline cleaning step that removes oils, waxes, sizes leftovers, and process residues so water, dye, and chemistry wet the cloth evenly.
By Wren Thunderborn, Head of Content
What is scouring in textile? Scouring is an alkaline cleaning step that removes natural waxes, spinning and weaving oils, leftover size, and process residues so water, dye, and chemistry wet the cloth evenly. On greige-to-PFD routes it follows desizing and precedes bleaching where the program specifies it.
Scouring vs desizing vs bleaching
Desizing removes warp size so liquor penetrates. Scouring removes the hydrophobic load—oils, waxes, residues—that blocks wetting. Bleaching then evens base color for dye or print. Each step has its own test: size spot-test, water-drop absorbency, whiteness.
Signs of poor scouring
Patchy or unlevel dye, resist spots that repel color, uneven water-drop times across the piece, and oil marks that survive into finishing. Fix the scour—more dye will not cover a wetting failure.
What to put on the PO
- Absorbency target and test method (e.g. water-drop seconds)
- pH and residual-chemical limits per the dye house
- Fiber, weave, width, GSM, and downstream route (dye, print, finish)
- Lab-dye approval on the actual construction before bulk
On Weaverine polyester programs, scouring is a preparation note on the greige-to-finish route—write the absorbency target and residuals, not the word scouring alone.
Common questions
What is scouring in textile?
- Scouring is an alkaline wash that strips natural waxes, spinning and weaving oils, and leftover size so water and dye penetrate evenly. Poor scouring shows up as patchy dye, resist spots, and uneven absorbency.
Where does scouring sit in preparation?
- After desizing and usually before bleaching: singe, desize, scour, bleach where specified. Scouring does the chemical cleaning; bleaching evens the base color.
What belongs on a PO that names scouring?
- Fiber and construction plus absorbency target, pH and residual limits, and the downstream dye or print route. Confirm with a water-drop test and a lab dye on the actual construction.
