Satin Stripe

A woven cloth whose stripe is made of satin-float bands next to a plainer ground, usually the same colour, so the stripe reads as sheen rather than printed or yarn-dyed colour.

What is satin stripe fabric? It is a woven look: bands of satin weave (long floats, typically 4/1 or similar) sit next to a plain or otherwise tighter ground. In the hospitality trade the same idea is often called hotel satin stripe or sateen stripe. The stripe is usually tone-on-tone—same fibre, same shade—so what you see is a change in sheen, not a bar of printed or yarn-dyed colour.

Satin float (schematic)

Long floats make the lustrous band. The ground next to it is a tighter interlacing, not a later print.

Dark = warp on the face. Light = weft on the face. Outline = one long float.

Satin stripe vs a coloured stripe

A yarn-dyed stripe is colour in the yarn before the first pick. A printed stripe is colour on the face after weaving. Satin stripe is a weave change across the width (or, less often, along the length): selected ends float, neighbouring ends interlace more often. Hold a white program to a window and the bands still read. Dye the piece one shade and the stripe remains, because the structure did not leave with the dye bath.

Apparel and cut-yard shops also sell striped satin—charmeuse or stretch satin with coloured bars. That is a different merchandise family. On a home-textile mill RFQ, “satin stripe” should mean the woven sheen band, unless you explicitly want yarn-dye colour or a print.

Hotel satin stripe sheeting vs polyester mill cloth

Retail and hotel-supply lists for satin stripe sheeting are often cotton or poly-cotton, quoted in thread count, with a familiar 1 cm (or similar) band. That is a finished-linen SKU. Weaverine weaves 100% polyester for home textiles. Specify denier, GSM, finished width, weave ratio, and band width—not a cotton TC as if it were the construction. Sateen is the spun-yarn satin-weave name; filament polyester satin stripe still needs the float ratio written out.

The long floats that make the band lustrous also leave more yarn on the face, so the satin portions snag more readily than the plain ground. Handle and launder it as a long-float cloth in those bands, not as a tight 1/1 everywhere.

How the mill weaves it

Insertion is still a water jet. The stripe needs dobby shedding: a dobby head sits on the existing waterjet and selects warp groups so satin floats land in bands next to a plainer ground. That is 喷水多臂—not a printed bar and not a separate jacquard hall. Confirm the band and ratio on a sample.

What to write on the RFQ

Freeze more than the words “satin stripe”:

  1. Fibre — 100% polyester unless you have another mill for cotton or CVC.
  2. Weave — satin ratio (e.g. 4/1) and the ground (plain, or another agreed structure).
  3. Band — width of the satin bar and of the ground, warp-wise or weft-wise, face vs back.
  4. Yarn, sett, GSM, width — greige and finished, as for other greige programs.
  5. Colour route — piece-dye / bleach for tone-on-tone; yarn-dye only if you also want coloured yarns.
  6. End use — sheets, duvet covers, or another home-textile cut.

Approve a physical woven sample in daylight. A screen will not show how the float sits next to the ground. For mill-direct polyester programs see satin stripe fabric.

Common questions

What is satin stripe fabric?

Satin stripe fabric is woven so bands of satin floats sit next to a plainer ground. The stripe is usually the same colour as the ground and shows as sheen, not as a printed or yarn-dyed colour bar.

Is satin stripe the same as yarn-dyed stripe?

No. Yarn-dye puts colour in the yarn before weaving. Satin stripe puts a different weave in selected bands. A cloth can be both, but they are separate notes on the PO.

Is hotel satin stripe the same as polyester mill satin stripe?

Hospitality “hotel satin stripe” often means cotton or poly-cotton sheeting sold by thread count. A polyester mill program is specified in fibre, weave ratio, band width, GSM, and width—not Egyptian-cotton thread count.

How is satin stripe different from printed stripe?

A printed stripe sits on the face after weaving and can wear or wash differently from the ground. A satin stripe is the interlacing plan: the band is still there if you turn the cloth in the light.

How is polyester satin stripe woven on a waterjet mill?

Weft insertion stays the water jet. A dobby head on that same loom selects warp groups so satin-float bands sit next to a plainer ground. It is not a print and not a separate jacquard hall.
