Pongee
A fine, soft plain-weave fabric with a light, slightly crisp hand — in polyester, a thin lining and shell cloth rather than a bedding weight.
Pongee is a plain-weave fabric woven from fine yarns, giving a light, soft, faintly crisp cloth with a subtle sheen. In polyester it is a thin lining and shell fabric — lighter and softer than taffeta, which is the tighter, stiffer plain weave.
1/1 Plain Weave Grid (Textured DTY)
Plain weave interlaced with textured DTY microfilaments produces pongee's soft, quiet drape.
Dark = warp on the face. Light = weft on the face.
Technical construction: semi-elastic vs full-elastic pongee
In modern waterjet weaving, polyester pongee is classified by its yarn combination and stretch hand:
| Variety | Warp Yarn | Weft Yarn | Common Density | Hand & Characteristics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-elastic Pongee | FDY 50D or 60D/24F | DTY 75D/72F | 190T, 210T, 240T | Smooth face with a soft, supple weft hand; standard for jacket linings, umbrellas, and flags. |
| Full-elastic Pongee | DTY 75D/72F | DTY 75D/72F | 240T, 300T, 320T | Flexible, matte, comfortable drape; preferred for outdoor shells, down jackets, and casual wear. |
| Matte (Dull) Pongee | Full-dull DTY 50D or 75D | Full-dull DTY 50D or 75D | 300T | Chalky matte finish with zero plastic glare; ideal for high-end outerwear and drapery backing. |
Pongee vs taffeta: how to choose
Both are plain weaves; the difference is yarn structure, density, and hand:
- Yarn Type: Taffeta is woven primarily from FDY (Fully Drawn Yarn), creating a crisp, smooth, paper-like hand with a faint luster. Pongee uses DTY (Draw Textured Yarn) in the weft or both directions, giving it bulk, softness, and drape.
- Noise & Rustle: Taffeta makes a distinct rustle when crumpled; pongee is softer and virtually silent.
- Application: Choose taffeta for structured linings that require slip and firmness (sleeves, tote bags, curtain backings). Choose pongee for garments and soft linings that rest against skin or require down-proof fill containment.
Why the weave matters
Plain weave crosses warp and weft one over one, so the cloth is flat, stable and inexpensive to weave. Pongee's fineness comes from the yarn — thin, even filament — not from a special structure. That is why a polyester pongee and a silk pongee share a look: the construction is the same, the fiber sets the hand.
Where polyester pongee is used
- Jacket and garment linings — light, smooth, easy to sew
- Down-jacket and quilted shells — a tight, lightweight base that holds fill
- Curtain and drapery linings — a soft, low-cost backing cloth
- Light home-textile uses — inner bags, decorative backing
What to put on the RFQ
- Construction — plain weave, yarn count and thread density
- Weight in GSM, and width after finishing (see finished vs greige GSM)
- Face — calendered or plain, and any coating or print
- End use — lining, shell or backing, which sets the density

Common questions
What is pongee fabric made of?
- Polyester pongee is woven from filament polyester yarns on waterjet looms, typically using textured DTY (Draw Textured Yarn) or an FDY warp with DTY weft to achieve a soft, lightweight hand.
What is the difference between pongee and taffeta?
- Pongee uses textured DTY yarn giving a soft, quiet hand and drape; taffeta uses fully drawn FDY yarn producing a crisp, smooth, rustling paper-like hand.
What does 240T or 300T mean in pongee?
- T stands for total thread count per inch (warp plus weft). 240T and 300T are dense constructions used for down-proof shells, windbreakers, and high-density linings.
What is semi-elastic pongee vs full-elastic pongee?
- Semi-elastic pongee weaves an FDY warp with a DTY weft for a smooth face with slight weft give; full-elastic pongee uses DTY in both directions for balanced flexibility and a matte hand.
