Sanforizing
A mechanical pre-shrinking process that controls fabric shrinkage to less than 1%, ensuring dimensional stability after washing.
Sanforizing is a patented mechanical process that pre-shrinks fabric to guarantee minimal residual shrinkage after consumer laundering. By compressing the fabric in a controlled manner before it leaves the mill, this treatment ensures that garments and home textiles maintain their intended dimensions through the product's useful life.
The process works by exploiting the natural tendency of woven fabrics to shrink when wet and relaxed. Fabric is first moistened with steam to relax the fibers. It then passes over a thick rubber blanket that stretches as it curves around a heated cylinder. As the blanket returns to its original length on the flat side, it compresses the fabric riding on its surface, forcing controlled shrinkage in the warp direction. The fabric is then dried and stabilized in this pre-shrunk state.
The results are precise and reliable. Residual shrinkage drops below 1%—typically guaranteed at 0.5% or less for quality sanforized goods. Dimensional stability improves dramatically, eliminating the frustrating experience of garments that fit perfectly before washing but become too small afterward. Sizing remains consistent across production runs, simplifying inventory management for retailers.
Testing follows established protocols including AATCC 135 for dimensional change after home laundering and ISO 6330 for washing procedures. Before-and-after measurements verify that the treatment achieves its specified shrinkage limits.
Denim relies heavily on sanforizing to deliver predictable fit. Shirting, bedding, uniforms, and any fabric where size stability matters to the end user benefit from this treatment. The "Sanforized" label has become a recognized quality mark that buyers actively seek.
